Using Body Language and Tone of Voice to Build a Positive Climate |
| Effective teachers use their body language and tone of voice to help connect with students during classroom activities. Watch how the students’ enthusiasm and excitement about the activity builds over the course of this clip. The teacher is building their excitement by making an active effort to connect with them. She is leaning forward in her chair, looking around to make eye contact with all the students, calling students by their names, and smiling at them. As the teacher starts to get more excited, so do the students. Also notice that although the teacher encourages the students to get loud, she uses her relationships with them to help them calm down too. She takes a moment to listen to them call out, smiling and nodding to communicate her listening, and then simply says “Yeah, OK, listen to this…” and the students are ready for the next part of the lesson. |
